PUBLIC INTEREST TENANTS RIGHTS ATTORNEY. Strategic Actions for a Just Economy is a Los Angeles based popular education and economic justice organization that helps build economic development policy from the grassroots up. We are responsible for creating the first welfare-to-work bank account in the country, for negotiating the nation's largest and most comprehensive community benefits agreement with a major developer, and we are presently organizing tenants to create the first "anti-displacement zone" in Los Angeles. We are currently looking for a recent public interest law graduate to join our team of organizers who staff the Figueroa Corridor Coalition for Economic Justice - a coalition of 31 organizations and hundreds of local residents from the neighborhoods which surround the 40 block strip of Figueroa which stretches from USC to the Staples Center. The Tenants Rights Attorney will: Receive training and support from the Eviction Defense Center of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. Work collaboratively with organizers and tenant activists to counter evictions, discrimination and harassment of tenants with an eye towards fighting slumlords and protecting affordable housing. Hold weekly tenants right workshops to educate local tenants on their rights. Represent tenants in landlord-tenant disputes. Manage and track the cases of tenants who have sought help from the project. Participate in the development of L.A.'s first Displacement Free Zone. Requirements include: Bi-lingual in Spanish and English. Completed law school and the bar examination. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse organizers and residents. Attention to detail. Ability to see the big picture of tenants rights. Minimum one year commitment with SAJE. BET TZEDEK LEGAL SERVICES: CONSUMER FRAUD ATTORNEY III. Responsible for conducting state and federal court litigation relating to predatory lending and other consumer law issues. Will handle own caseload and additionally will mentor less experienced legal staff, volunteer attorneys and law clerks. Will litigate on behalf of individual clients and will also handle impact litigation. The attorney will conduct legislative advocacy to secure the rights of consumers and work with other public interest organizations and law enforcement agencies. QUALIFICATIONS: At least 4 years federal and state court litigation experience; Active member in good standing with the California State Bar; Demonstrated experience formulating and commenting on public policy on the issues of home equity fraud and other consumer fraud issues preferred; Experience in landlord/tenant issues typical in legal services offices; Experience in supervision of legal staff.
